A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests an 89% success rate in preventing malaria using mosquitoes and genetically modified parasites.
Researchers exposed participants to mosquitoes carrying a genetically modified strain of parasites associated with malaria (Plasmodium falciparum). The modification ensures the parasites stop developing shortly after entering the human bloodstream.
The most common short term side effect is skin inflammation and the long term side effects are not yet known.
